David Wintersteen: Dinner with Father Divine: Lessons from a "New Religious Movement"

In the 1920's and 1930's, a Black preacher who called himself "Father Divine" gathered a large following when he claimed to be God. His "Peace Mission Fellowship" grew in numbers throughout the first two-thirds of the 20th Century, built on a platform of pacifism, civil rights and economic justice. Last fall, David Wintersteen attended a "Holy Communion Banquet" with this group, and met the person they believe is the virgin bride of God. What do UU's have to learn from this unique – and fading – "new religious movement?"

FEBRUARY 9

Annual Poetry & Music Sunday: Poet Mary Pryor and the Dakota Rose String Quartet

A familiar face at arts events and on bike paths throughout town, retired MSUM Professor of English Mary Pryor is also known for her volumes of poetry, many of which are fearlessly political. She will be joined by the Dakota Rose String Quartet, whose members also play in the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, including first violinist and FMSO assistant concertmaster Jane Linde Capistran.

FEBRUARY 16

Reverend Shawnthea Monroe-Mueller: The Source of Revelation

Reverend Shawnthea Monroe-Mueller, minister of the First Congregational UCC in Moorhead, returns to speak to the FMUU church about the ongoing sources of revelation unique to UU's. Either individually or collectively, how do we decide what's true?

FEBRUARY 23

New Member Ingathering

Join us as we welcome new members to our congregation and explore what has drawn them to our church. A panel of long-time and new members will discuss the principals of Unitarian Universalism and how our congregation affirms and promotes the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
