In the 1920's and 1930's, a Black preacher who called himself "Father Divine" gathered a large following when he claimed to be God. His "Peace Mission Fellowship" grew in numbers throughout the first two-thirds of the 20th Century, built on a platform of pacifism, civil rights and economic justice. Last fall, David Wintersteen attended a "Holy Communion Banquet" with this group, and met the person they believe is the virgin bride of God. What do UU's have to learn from this unique – and fading – "new religious movement?"
A familiar face at arts events and on bike paths throughout town, retired MSUM Professor of English Mary Pryor is also known for her volumes of poetry, many of which are fearlessly political.
