JANUARY 5

Jazz/Blues Sunday: The Hard-Bop Saxophone Quartet

One of Fargo-Moorhead's favorite ensembles, this amazing quartet takes jazz improvisation and technical virtuosity and kicks it up a few notches. Hard Bop refers to an era in the history of jazz that took the traditions of Bebop, mixed them with the unique compositional elements of the Cool School and added generous portions of soul. Hard-Bop was to jazz what Wagner was to classical--tradition stretched to the limits. This music will be sure to heat up your January morning!

JANUARY 12

Dawn Morgan: The Spirit Room: Its Philosophy and Offerings

The underlying philosophy of the Spirit Room in downtown Fargo encourages awakening from the illusion that we are separate, ridged beings trapped in a solid identity.  Dawn Morgan, director of the Spirit Room, will speak of the Hindu origins of yoga and meditation and how yoga and Buddhist Meditation have recently come together in the United States.  Morgan will lead the congregation in a Buddhist Meditation and a Tibetan Meditation called Tonglen, which is used to develop compassion for oneself and others.

JANUARY 19

Dennis Cooley - A Universal Moral Theory

We cannot always foresee the consequences of our actions and sometimes we make mistakes.  To what degree are we morally responsible? Using the work of John Stuart Mill and Immanuel Kant, we will explore with NDSU Professor Dennis Cooley ways to capture our universal intuitions about morality.

JANUARY 26

Mark Vinz: Finding the Spirit in a Midwestern Mid-Winter

Some Thoughts on the Poetry of Place. More than any other, this is the time of year we're driven inward, sometimes to the point of depression.  But in that inwardness there's also a lot to sustain us.
