Kahl is a local musician who has received national recognition for his beautiful song styling. This is a new twist on our tradition of beginning the New Year with a musical program. There are many notable thinkers and traditions that say there is an abundant and authentic spirituality in the experience of suffering. They talk of walking in darkness (at times) and the promise of light; that the journey of life necessarily has periods of both darkness and light, each with its own set of gifts. While not to be minimized, times of suffering also hold gifts of growth, deepening and wisdom and sometimes include the gift of curiosity and seeking, rather than certainty and finding. Peggy Gaynor is recently retired counselor who is seeking the next phase of life with curiosity.
NDSU professor emeritus John Monzingo offers an analysis of the U.S. Constitution in term of the powers it grants and the limitations on that power; a pertinent question in a time when there appears to be a widespread erosion of individual civil liberties. Our constitution is based on John Locke's concept of freedom and our emphasis on limitations of government as essential to individual freedom also is Lockean. However, there are other ways to define freedom.
